Western Australia’s Murray River, flowing from the Peel Inlet and stretching 134 kilometers into the Peel Region, is a testament to unspoiled nature. As one of the few rivers near Perth not dammed for public water supply, its natural flow remains undisturbed, enhancing its inherent scenic beauty.
The Thrill of Black Bream Fishing
The Murray River’s South Yunderup to Pinjarra stretch is a haven for Black Bream, presenting anglers with a challenging and rewarding fishing experience. Notably, the Murray River Black Bream are some of the toughest fighters in South East Western Australia, providing a thrilling encounter for anglers. Murray’s bend near Ravenswood is a recommended spot for targeting Black Bream with lures. Given the snaggy river beds, anglers should be prepared to lose a few lures and consider increasing their leader to 8-12lb.
Bait and Lures to Use
Small suspending hard body minnows lures are effective amongst the river’s snags, but removing the middle treble from these lures is advised. Additionally, small soft plastics (1.5” – 2.5”) in motor oil or pumpkin color have proven successful.
Exploring the Diverse Fish Population
Beyond Black Bream, the river is also home to Mulloway and Whiting. The flats in the Peel Inlet are particularly known for Whiting, welcoming anglers with poppers. Further upstream, Trout enthusiasts will find the river stocked and ready, particularly during spring when the trout spread into the brooks and upstream.
