Since 1925, the Waroona Agricultural Society, initially known as the Drakesbrook Agricultural Society, has held an annual event that has captivated the community – the Waroona Show. This event serves as a grand celebration of art, culture, competitions, and agriculture, making it the heart of the local community’s social calendar. The Waroona Show is not just an event; it’s a tradition that fosters community spirit. In 2023, the Waroona Agricultural Society will commemorate its 92nd show.
The Waroona Agricultural Society: The Backbone of the Waroona Show
The Society comprises an executive committee and general committee, all of whom are volunteers. These individuals represent a diverse cross-section of the community and work tirelessly throughout the year to ensure the show’s success. On the day of the show, the volunteer count escalates to over 120, excluding those working for other community organizations. The Waroona Show serves as the biggest fundraising event of the year for local community organizations and is the largest single event in the Shire. This show is also the only Agricultural show in the Peel Region, making it a unique, prestigious event.
A Feast for the Senses
The Waroona Show offers a plethora of attractions each year. From wood chopping to side show alley, trade stalls, and horse, cattle, and poultry competitions, there is something for everyone. Attendees can explore the culinary delights of cooking competitions or be inspired by the sewing, horticulture, floral, arts, and creative arts competitions. The show also offers free activities for children, making it an event for all ages. As the sun sets, the Alcoa fireworks display lights up the sky to signal the grand finale of the festivities.
Step Back in Time: The History of the Waroona Show
Initially known as the Drakesbrook Agricultural Society, the name changed in 1929 to Waroona – Hamel and Districts Agricultural Society, a moniker retained until the early 1950s. In 1951, the Society rebranded to its current name, the “Waroona Agricultural Society Inc.”, and became an incorporated body on July 23rd, 1976. The Society has managed to hold the show every year since its inception, with a few exceptions during World War II (1940-1945) and the recent COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The Society strives to provide a platform for the exhibition of agricultural, pastoral, mineral, and industrial products, livestock, and to promote educational, art, cultural, and historical activities.
In 2023, the Waroona Agricultural Society will join hands with the community to celebrate its 92nd show. This event will not only serve as a celebration of agriculture and culture but also as a testament to the resilience and spirit of the Waroona community. The Waroona Show is more than an event—it’s a legacy.
